The Importance Of Using Safety Helmets

When we reckon about motorcycles we reckon about the feel of the rushing wind in our faces and our hair blowing back behind us. We reckon about looking cool as we speed down the road. What we don’t reckon about is what happens to the human body when it is involved in a motorcycle collision with a car or van. We don’t reckon about the impact of the collision, the body being thrown clear and sliding along the road’s surface until it stops on its own or until it encounters a fence or a telephone pole.

It was the death of a race car driver that sparked interest in helmet safety in this country. In 1956, William Snell was killed when his helmet failed to protect him in what was deemed a survivable race car accident. Since that time, the standards for helmets have been regulated by the American National Standards Institute, with the input of the Snell Memorial Foundation. While we can regulate helmet safety, it is not always possible to get people to wear them. Unless they are mandated by law, many people refuse to do so.

According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration, just under half of all motorcycle deaths between 1990 and 1993 resulted because the rider was not wearing a safety helmet. Even if death is avoided when the helmetless rider was injured, there may still be drastic consequences. Head, neck and back injuries may leave riders paralyzed or handicapped for life.

Bike Insurance the Easy Way

Bike theft is on the rise with thieves running off with hundreds of millions worth of bikes every year, a third of which are taken from outside people’s homes. But, it pays dividends for cyclists and motorcyclists to check through their home insurance policy to make sure that they are covered not only for having a bike outside their property but also to cover all eventualities, including those that occur while cycling away from the home.

The majority of home insurance policies will cover the theft of bikes within the overall cover of home contents if personal possessions are included within the policy, but not all insurers will offer to include bikes so it is vital that you ascertain this information when shopping around for an insurance provider. Personal possessions insurance will have differing stipulations, for example some will include push bikes but not motor bikes. In these instances, cyclists will have to take out additional cover with the insurer to cover their vehicle.

Halifax General Insurance advises its customers to check whether they are covered while they are out and about, as if their bike is stolen they could end up paying out for an unexpected journey to get back home. To avoid the inconvenience and potential additional costs it is highly recommended to ensure you are covered for all possible instances. Figures from Halifax have revealed that approximately half a million bicycles are stolen annually in the UK alone, with south west London being a prime breeding ground for bike thieves. Kingston upon Thames was the top spot for thefts in 2007, while Cambridge, Bristol and Oxford were among the other highly targeted areas.

Garage storage solutions have to start with a question that only you can answer: What is my storage problem in the garage? Once you have that question answered accurately you can then go on to a consideration of alternate solutions. If you seek a solution before you really know the problem or need, then you may end up spending money on a “solution” that really just becomes part of an ever growing problem. It wouldn’t make any sense, for example, to buy a kayak rack to hang on the wall of your garage, if you don’t own a kayak. Or let’s say you have a garden shed that houses a lot of your yard tools and paint supplies. It obviously wouldn’t make any sense to buy and install garage storage solutions for those items. You might buy them for the shed, but not for the garage.

For years I was frustrated with how things just got tossed in my garage. I couldn’t ever really place the car in there because there was never any room. The kids had their bikes in there. All my tools were sort of randomly stored there. With all the miscellaneous boxes, holiday decorations, sports equipment, etc., there was never really any order to it. Seems like the garage was this ever-changing monster that just sort of ate away at my peace of mind. My wife and I used to joke around about how feng-shui our garage was. I hope you are picking up on a small sarcasm here, because that’s exactly what it is. Feng shui? Are you kidding me. I reckon by joking about the garage we made ourselves feel a small less pain.

But the blessed day finally came when we snapped out of it, place our thinking caps on, and learned to itemize the real problems in the garage. We literally wrote down on a piece of paper all of the areas that needed fixing. The main garage storage solutions we found to work best for us were: first, bins, hooks and racks that attach to the wall for storing the kid’s sport balls, bats, roller blades, bikes, jump rope, and winter toys. This alone helped a lot. All those small things that used to just float around wherever now have a specific place to be stored. Second, adequate shelving and cabinet space. We had a small bit of storage before, but nowhere near adequate. Once we installed more cabinets and shelves the garage really started to become a place free of stress. So much of the stuff we had could be place behind closed doors or neatly on shelves that the floor space was freed up enough to pull the car in. We had a huge cake to celebrate that day!
